One of our first horses from a kill pen had to be set free from his painful, cancer ridden body shortly after we got him. I was devastated that someone knew he was sick and injured and sold him anyway. Sadness turned to anger. I decided we were going to start by educating our community and anyone who would listen about what happens to our equine and how they are treated after they are no longer deemed “useful”. Having an animal, whether for fun, performance, entertainment, business or a pet, is NOT a right, it is a responsibility. It is a privilege. The Canyon House is a sanctuary and forever home that provides lifelong physical and emotional care to horses who have found themselves in an impossibly bad situation and need help for their survival.
We have facilities located in two locations
One night I came across a post from an equine rescue, advertising a donkey for adoption. The video went on to explain how horses and donkeys are exported out of the country for either meat consumption or hide rendering for medicinal tea. I had no idea this still happened. I looked at my husband and said, “we need to adopt a donkey”. A few months later, I reached out to a local rescue and adopted 2 donkeys. For the next year and half, I studied horse slaughter, kill pens, feed lots, horse traders, equine rescues, and discovered an entirely new industry I did not know existed. After unraveling the good and bad, the only thing I knew for sure was there were animals who were truly suffering. I had the knowledge, the resources, the space and the energy. I knew we could help.
